IBS at a Glance

Location

The University of Rajshahi is located about 5 miles east of city centre of Rajshahi, one of the divisional head quarters of the country. The IBS complex is situated at the south eastern part of Rajshahi University campus, next to the teacher’s quarters E-5 and E-8. The complex faces the Rajshahi-Dhaka highway with entrance at the Binodpur gate and is about 150 yards east of Binodpur gate.

 Background

Immediately after the emergence of Bangladesh, as part of imminent nation building activities needs for extensive and in-depth research on different aspects of life, society, culture, anthropology, geography, environment, law, language and  literature and  various other fields that relate to Bangladesh was  keenly felt  for socio-cultural, political and economic advancement of the country. The Institute was founded to cater for these needs of the country.
IBS was established on 25 September 1973 under an Act of the Bangladesh Parliament, No. XXVI. of 1973. Known as Rajshahi University Act, 1973. As an advanced centre for inter-disciplinary study and research on various aspects of Bangladesh society, life and culture. IBS started functioning with the formation of the Board of Governors and appointment its first of Director in January, 1974.

 Objectives

The objectives of IBS are to

  1. Provide facilities for, and promote advanced studies and research on the history, geography, economics, politics, sociology, anthropology, law, language, literature and linguistics, philosophy, art, archaeology, music, and culture of Bangladesh and such other subjects as are significantly related to the life and society of Bangladesh leading to the M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees;
  2. Undertake research projects on Bangladesh related issues in co-operation with public or private organisations as and when necessary under mutual agreements;
  3. Place at the disposal of government, policymakers and planners the results of the researches conducted at the Institute for fruitful utilization of the research finding and recommendations in planning and development schemes;
  4. Cooperate with other relevant departments of the University of Rajshahi for research activities on Bangladesh related issues.
  5. Popularize Bangladesh Studies in and outside the country through seminars, conferences and publications; and
  6. Perform such other functions as will facilitate attainment of the objects of the Institute.

 Facilities

Computer Lab : IBS has a state of the art computer lab with internet facilities for both teachers and research fellows. It is open from 8 am to 8 pm.
Fellowship : The Institute offers a good number of fellowships for full-time study at the Institute. The award of fellowship is effective from the time of admission.
Residence : The institute has two separate four-storied dormitory buildings with single and family accommodations fellows.
Library : Since its inception, the IBS has put special emphasis on building up a rich research Library and documentation centre of its own. The library has a stock of about 25 thousand books and about 4 thousand journals. The library has developed collaboration with many other major libraries and research organizations at home and abroad for exchanging research publications.

 Management of the Institute

The day to day administration of the Institute is run by a full time Director. He is assisted by a Secretary and other staff. All academic, administrative, development, planning and financial matters of IBS are initially decided by the Institute Committee consisting of the Director and the regular teachers. The committee’s resolutions are sent to higher bodies for approval. This committee assists the Director in all respects. This is a statutory committee of the Institute. Purely for academic matters a Board of Studies is formed according to the Statute of the Institute.
The Board of Studies prepares courses of study and syllabus, makes panels of examiners, frames rules relating to admissions and examinations, and determines the requirements of the degrees offered by the Institute. These are then sent to the IBS Board of Governors and then to the Academic Council and the Syndicate, Rajshahi University for approval.
Apart from the above arrangements, overall administration and management of the Institute is vested in a Board of Governors consisting of the Vice-Chancellor (Chairman), five representatives of different faculties, three regular teachers of IBS, a nominee of the Syndicate, a nominee of the Academic council, the Curator of the Varendra Research Museum, two scholars from other universities nominated by the Chancellor and the Director of the Institute (Member-Secretary). All academic, administrative and financial policy issues of IBS are decided by this Board for the final approval of the Academic Council and the Syndicate of the University.

 The Academic Year

The academic year of IBS starts on July 1 and ends on June 30 each year. The IBS follows office holidays in line with Rajshahi University.

 Guide

At the time of admission, a candidate is required to indicate the topic of his research along with the name of a prospective supervisor from among the teaching staff of IBS/Rajshahi University.
However, if his supervisor and IBS authority are satisfied with his work, an M.Phil. candidate may, under certain conditions, be transferred to the Ph.D. programme.

 Completed Ph.D. and M.Phil. Degree Programmes of IBS

So far over 200 candidates completed their Ph.D. degrees and 80 candidates conducted research for obtaining their M.Phil. degrees at the IBS. In total 260 Research Fellows obtained M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees from IBS. A total number of about 90 Research fellows are regularly working at IBS for attaining M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees.
