Ecology and Biodiversity Research Laboratory

Dr. Md. Redwanur Rahman

Lab Background

Plants and animals living in their physical environment make up an ecosystem. The study of such ecosystems is referred as ecology. Water is one of the important substances necessary for life, which determines the structure and functions of the ecosystem. Moreover, Invasion ecology has grown to become an important multi-disciplinary sub field of ecology with growing links to many other disciplines. Scientists in the Ecology and Biodiversity Lab study plants, animals and microbes to discover the ecology and evolution of our planet. We explore the unknown in Bangladesh, around the world, and sometimes even on our own bodies. The Lab serves as our headquarters where we prepare for expeditions, send live updates from the field, and return with data and specimens documenting our discoveries.

Objective:
  1. Climate change impact on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning
  2. Biodiversity-soil-microbe interactions
  3. Species interactions and evolutionary adaptation
Specific research objectives:
  1. Answering fundamental ecological and evolutionary questions regarding the relationship between biodiversity and the structure of ecological communities, paying special attention to evolutionary adaptation to environmental change.
  2. Answering fundamental ecological questions on how global change factors affect biodiversity and ecosystem functioning and making projections of future ecosystem behavior based on the results obtained today and from the past both by experimentation and modeling;
  3. Applying the results of our fundamental research to areas where society needs sound and robust answers to environmental problems (e.g. environmental pollution, increasing climatic fluctuations and extremes, increasing fire risk, salinization, sustainable agriculture, genetically modified organisms, sea level rise and coastal defense, spatial planning).
Ongoing Research:
  1.  Impact of Agriculture Practices on Sustainable Biodiversity in Rajshahi District
  2.  Determination of the effect of Mushroom on Arsenicosis Patients by Analysing Physico-Chemical and Biological Parameters
  3.  Impact of Environmental Change on Natural Resource-based Food System of Tribal Communities of North-Western Region in Bangladesh
  4.  Influence of Environmental Components on Molluscan Biodiversity of the South Western Region in Bangladesh
  5.  Environmental Impact on Osteoarthritis and it’s Sustainable Management Using Therapeutic Agent
  6.  Environmental Impacts of Coal Based Thermal Power Plants, Dinajpur, Bangladesh
  7.  Legal Framework for Ensuring Sustainable Water Resource Management in Bangladesh
  8.  Estimation of radiation Doses of Nuclear Medicine and Its Effects on Human Health
  9.  Investigation on Seasonal Variation of Biochemical Composition of Crab
