Development of Computing and Network Resources

  • Network Infrastructure – The University of Rajshahi has high speed optical fiber local area network (LAN) since 2000. The LAN is extended two times and the last expansion is carried in 2022. Presently, the total length of underground optical fiber LAN is more than 34 km. It covers all the academic, administrative building, central library, faculty club, senate building, residence halls as well as the on-campus residence for the employees. A noticeable part of the campus including central library, residence halls, some parts of academic and administration building is covered with wireless network for authorized personnel within the campus. All the residence halls are covered with wireless network as well as high speed LAN connectivity to each room for the students. The paid internet service is provided by the BTCL and BdREN over the campus with 2800Mbps bandwidth.

Data Center: In 2014, computer center is transfer from 1st science building to 4th science building due to the serious civil structure problem at the previous place. A data center is constructed with required facilities to smoothly run the network system over the campus. It is well equipped with expansion facility. Although it is possible to mount 8 server racks we presently setup only 2 racks, whereas, the capacity of the previous data center was only 4 racks. Several network equipment (servers, Firewalls etc.) are installed to provide better network related services. Presently, it is 244 fiber nodes (also expandable). The data has environmental monitoring, fire protection system and other security issues. It has also online ups with 4 hours power backup and generator as alternative power supply.

  • ICT Training Cell – A bundle of stakeholders are related to the university. To provide the related services to individual stakeholders is mainly come from the skilled human resource. In the current age of ICT, the University of Rajshahi is ready to prove ICT based supports for its different entities. A proper training is required to reform the human resource fit to provide ICT based administrative and academic supports. A training cell is established under ICT center with modern equipment to provide periodic training for RU employees. The training cell can also be used to conduct training on any specialized system for the researcher, students and entrepreneur.
  • Virtual Classroom – A virtual classroom is setup with high end equipment at RU ICT center for 60 students. It is fully funded by BdREN (Bangladesh research and education network). The lectures, seminars helding at different university over the world are conducting through the virtual classroom. It is really great facility for the student and faculty of RU to share their teaching/learning and research ideas with the other universities.
  • AR/VR/MR Laboratory – The most popular computer technology that has taken over a majority of the technology columns is Visual Reality (VR). VR’s siblings, Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR), have become generic in comparison. While so far VR has focused on enhancing the entertainment department, it is slowly spreading to all kinds of workplaces and industries with its translocating and enchanting immersion specialties. VR is an industry that, as aforementioned, will be the primary technology used by all workplaces in the near future, so it is important for those seeking VR for higher education to be prepared for this change and embrace it as early as possible.

Students in universities have to devote the majority of their time towards their majors. Hence, students pursuing higher education in any one of the STEM disciplines (i.e. Science Technology Engineering Medical) will be required to undergo training or simply out, practical experience. A augmented reality/virtual reality is established at Rajshahi University with high-end equipment funded by Bangladesh Hi-Tech park authority (Rajshahi).

  • Online Admission System – The University of Rajshahi introduced online admission system from academic year 2014-15. With this system, the student can be admitted with RU online admission system by proving all the required information through the web-based system. The payment for admission is completed through mobile banking system and the payment information is used in online admission system. Student can easily complete the admission system by submitting the filled (online) form to the corresponding dean office. The students of all the affiliated institutes of RU will use the same admission system. The collected information of the newly admitted students is directly used in the university automation system as well as to provide the smart ID card for individual.
  • Admission system for the affiliated colleges: Admission and academic management system for all the colleges affiliated with RU is implemented to provide better and transparent services to the students, and authorities.
  • Exam Fee payment and e-form fill-up system: The students of RU can fill the form to appear semester/year end examination though online system. The admit card corresponding to the exam are printed based on the online information. The exam fees are collected at the bank using smart card.
  • Online Payment System – Without online payment system it is not possible to get the full flavor of automation. The payment for different services (for example – admission fee, event registration fee, conference registration fee etc.) of the university has already implemented through mobile banking payment system. All types of payments and registration system of last 9th convocation and admission 2014-15 are implemented through online payment and registration scheme. Some other payment methods which are still running with traditional payment system (bank slip etc.). The implementation of online payment system for other services (for example – certificate issue fee) is under consideration to make smooth the automated service.
  • Digital Admission system for current students – The current students of RU can complete their admission in the next year/semester though the digital admission system including payment by mobile banking.
  • Online Hall Management System: Integrated software in developed for online hall management. The all the student related management and payment are performed online. The RU smart card is used to authenticate the students and digital records of all the transactions are stored in the central server.

Automation of Result Processing System: The certificate issuing and authentication system of this university has already been made automated. The full automation of the result processing system is currently in use. The automated result processing system will also be applicable for all the affiliated institutes of RU.
