Co-Curricullar Activities
It is assumed that any person admitted as a student at DoMCJ is aware of its mission and hopes to gain the maximum educational benefits available, both formal and informal. Informal education benefits available to students are those which accrue from participation in the political, social, religious, cultural, aesthetic, and recreational experience related to the non-academic life of the department as well as the Rajshahi University community and contact with the broader public community of which the University is a part.
Aiming to bridge gap between theories and practice, professional and academic knowledge and to ensure a string media role in the society many seminar, workshop and cultural programmes are being organized by this department. It may help the students to prepare themselves in the challenging job market. Besides, our students participate in various extra-curriculum activities.
1st batch student Md. Matiul Alam was the department champion at cricket from 1993 to 1994. 1st batch student Ruhul Quddus Khan Sumon was the Vice-President of Basketball Team of Rajshahi University. 3rd batch student Mushfiqu Babu was a Cricketer of Bangladesh National Team and 3rd batch student Akhanda Md. Ehetesam-Ul-Arefin was 6th in national rank at Lawn Tennis in 1997. 14th batch student Nazmun Nahar Lovely is a National athlete. She achieved a lot of national prizes.
8th batch student Shushanta Sinha was the National Gold medalist of National Contemporary Speech Competition in 2002 and National Gold medalist of National Debate Championship in 2006. Besides, he was the Champion of Single Debate Competetion of University Group organized by British Council in 2003. 9th batch student Mahfuzur Rahman Mishu was the Team Leader and Best Speaker at Inter-Department Debate Championship of Rajshahi University in 2003. Beside this he was the best speaker at Inter-Hall Debate Championship in 2000 organizd by RUDS and Runner Up at Barwary Debate Championship by Holly Cross Debate Club.
17th batch student Rejowana Mowly became 5th in “Sera Panch Taroka”, a music competition organized by ATN Bangla.
Campus Journalism
MSS students of our department conduct a practical newspaper named Anudhyan as a part of their practical work. There is a model newsroom in our Media Research Laboratory for Anudhyan. Practical examinations are also going to be introduced for the different-year students as part of their courses within a very short time.
Besides this, as many as 37 students of the department are practicing journalists as campus correspondents of the national and local news media of print, electronic and online. Very soon department is going to create the scope of learning radio, television and online journalism practically.
Film Activities
The department arranges film show on two days a week as part of their studying, exercising and making films. Masters students make short films and documentaries as part of their practical work. They have made 10 short films and documentaries so far. Recently the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism and Rajshahi University Film Society jointly organized a week-long international film festival named “Beyond Border Bangla Film Festival, 2015” from 18th to 24th November, 2015.
It should be mentioned here that, Dr. Mozammel Hossain Bakul (Pen-Name Sazzad Bokul), Assistant Professor of the department and also the President of Rajshahi University Film Society has made a Documentary Film named Dabanal (Fire of Freedom) on our first intellectual martyr Dr. Shamsuzzoha’s killing during mass uprising in 1969 and its impact on our liberation war. He is now making a complete biographical documentary film on life and work of our national rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.
Kazi Mamun Haider, Assistant Professor of the department is the editor of a film journal named Magic Lanthan along with our students. Magic Lanthan organizes lectures, ‘addas’ (get together) and study circles on film and cinema with the cinema professionals and critics. It also produces documentaries and short films directed and made by its activists.
Photography Club
The department is now going to start a photography club with its students under the supervision of Abdullahil Baki, Lecturer of this department.
