SDGs, Data Science & Industry Readiness of Bangladesh

Mahboob Zaman*
Abstract: The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030.
Monitoring the progress made by different countries towards meetings the Sustainable Development Goals is extremely crucial to track progress. Data driven measurement of progress needs to be distributed to stakeholders mainly policymakers, researchers, government entities, civil society, nonprofit organizations etc. Decision based on data can be used to re-align and influence governments, businesses, citizens to accelerate progress.
Measuring and controlling data of Sustainable Development Goals is quite impossible to measure and distribute by using traditional data gathering and manipulation techniques due to the volume and distribution of data points around the globe. This is where Data Science, especially Big Data comes into play.
Bangladesh is an example of growth due to the socio-economic gains achieved under the Millennium Development Goals and currently well positioned to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals too. To keep track of impacts delivered by different government projects and policies, measuring impact by quantitative analysis is required in regular intervals.
Since all the 17 SDGs are integrated by impacting, influencing and balancing each other. The complex nature of measuring this inter – dependent impact analysis needs state of the art technologies and capacity building nationwide in the sector of Data Analysis. Structured combination of resources from Data Science & Statistics, Computer Science and Math is mandatory to achieve excellence in this sector.
To achieve the desired Industry readiness, private sector needs to work closely with universities. Taking steps to conduct technology trend analysis, preparing requirement matrix at regular intervals. Ensuring knowledge dissemination among industry and academia followed by developing curriculum of Data Science to meet the global standard will help developing resources.
