Welcome to the Department of Arabic

Dr. Md. Jahidul Islam

Chairman

University of Rajshahi

Arabic Language is recognized as an official language of United Nations and Arab League.  On the other hand Arabic language is used as state language in more than 24 countries. Besides that 11 of those countries used Arabic language as their mother tongue in Asian continent. So, importance of Arabic language is beggar description for Bengalidesh as a south Asian country.

As an independent and Muslim nation, Bengalidesh is the member of OIC and other Islamic organizations. We need to be adroit at Arabic language for taking different facilities from such types of organizations. Now a days Bengalideshi soldiers are working at peacekeeping mission organized by UN. They participated at UNIIMOG mission for the first time. They need many interpreters who can translate Arabic language into Bengali.

We earn 80 percent of foreign currency from Arab countries. If we can develop the international relationship and diplomatic co-operation with them, we will be able to sustain the stream of earning. If we want to make a borderless market for exporting Bengalideshi products in Arab countries, we have to know their demands and desire, especially their language. Bengalidesh is the fourth biggest Muslim country of the world. That is why 90% people of here contain a religious value and Islamic ethics at the core of their heart. So, Bengalidesh government should prepare some experts who have a good command over Arabic language.

The general universities in Bengalidesh also have departments for the study of Arabic. The Arabic departments have a large intake of undergraduate students. Most of the students go on to graduate studies, with some students obtaining M Phil and PhD degrees every year. Some of their thesis are written in Arabic. Many Bengalideshi students with the degree of Arabic go to universities in the Middle East for higher studies. The Arabic department of Rajshahi University and Dhaka University have been publishing two journals in Arabic, Al-Majallatu’l ‘Buhuthul Arabia and Al-Majallatu’l ‘Arabiyyah. Other journals such as Ikra, the monthly Al-Kalam, Al-Islahand the monthly Al-Huda are published in Arabic.

We have many headings like to research in Arabic but we have no support for proper improvement. If government takes some positive steps and some Islamic Organizations come forward to cherish Arabic language, it will help us to enrich our knowledge as well 15 national economy.

Bengalidesh is one of the biggest Muslim Country. With a view to imparting Arabic education in Bengalidesh, the Department of Arabic was established independently in 1978 under the faculty of Arts, University of Rajshahi. This department offers different courses both at Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. There are 22 academic staff (teachers)with specialization in different fields of Arabic. There are also 5 (five) non academic staff for the support of Arabic education and research in the department. Hundreds of graduates are found as alumni of this department to date. The academic staff and some students of this department has already taken part with several national and international seminars and acted as a member of various research organizations. They are working well with them. Therefore, it is the high time to take part in SA process for identification of the areas of SWOT and for preparation of improvement plan towards accreditation afterwards.

The Department of Arabic is one of the Departments of Arts Faculty of the University of Rajshahi. In 1962, the Language Department was established including Arabic. It separated from the Language Department; on August 25, 1978, the Arabic Department was established independently. Later in the session 1980-1981 Islamic Studies was attached to it and was separated on 5 January 1995. Since then the Arabic Department has been functioning as an independent department. Professor Dr. Aftab Ahmad Rahmani (1926-1984) was the founder chair of the department. The present chair of the department is Professor Dr. Mohammad Sabirul Islam Hawlader.
