Professor M. Altaf Hossain joined as a lecturer in the Department of Zoology in 1973 and was promoted as Professor in 1986. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from Andra University, India in 1977. He did his post doctoral work at Isle of Man, UK in 1983-1984 under the Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellowship. Prof. Hossian was a Chairman in the Department of Zoology from 1982 to 1985. He also served as a founder Dean, Faculty of Life and Earth Sciences, RU for the period from 1992 to 1993. He was a Director, Institute of Biological Sciences, RU. Prof. Hossain was Pro-Vice Chancellor in the Rajshahi University for the period from 1994 to 1996. Now he has been serving as a Vice chancellor in the same University since 2005.
Prof. Hossain specializes in Fisheries, environmental issues and biodiversities, socio-economics and prawn cultures. He has about 150 research publications in various national and international journals of repute. Professor Hossain supervised a remarkable number of M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. research students. He also received a National Fisheries Award in 2005.
