Social Work, as an independent department of the University of Rajshahi, was established in 1972. However, teaching on this subject in B.A. (hons). was begun in 1964 and M.A. in 1969. At present, the department offers BSS (Hons.), MSS, M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees.

The department of Social Work has a long heritage of acquiring and disseminating knowledge, experience, and skills in social work research. It provides not only classroom teachings, but also includes in its curricula practical field work and research. While teaching professional knowledge on theory and practice of social work, the department emphasizes on explaining various social problems and finding out various ways of solving them by using social work methods and strategies. Besides, the department is determined in innovating indigenous theories and techniques to solve the social problems of Bangladesh by combining knowledge and skills from other related disciplines and fitting them within the framework of social work research. The department also attaches great importance to solving social problems through curative and preventive measures by using social case, group and community work, community organization and community development. To eradicate the social evils and to fulfill basic human needs, the aim of social work education is to bring about positive social change through social movement, social action, social research and social development in different perspectives.

The department of social work has played a significant positive role in the acquiring of knowledge, skills to solve our social problems. The government and non-government organizations are highly benefited by the skills acquired by the students of social work. The Department of Social Work has already produced skilled professional Social Workers and as a result the department is playing a significant role to get jobs in development programs. Hence, education provided in this department is very much helpful in finding good jobs.
Under the circumstances, the demand to get enrolled into this department is gradually increasing, making it a discipline of highest demand in the faculty of social sciences at University of Rajshahi in the year 2003-04.

At present the Department of Social Work offers 4 year B.S.S (honours), M.S.S., M. Phil. and Ph.D. Degree
