The University
of Rajshahi was established in the year of 1953. Faculty of Science
includes 13 departments in 1985 and from there a separate faculty
named Faculty of Life and Earth Sciences started its activities
from 1986. It may be mentioned here that in this University Deans
are elected according to the 1973 act i.e. the staff members under
the faculty elect their deans for two years by secret ballot. The
deans who have been elected to date are as follows.

There are five
departments under the faculty of Life and Earth Sciences Department
of Geography was established in the year of 1955. First Head of
this department was Professor A.M. Patel. Now this department has
been named as Department of Geography and Environmental studies.
The Department of Psychology was established in 1956 by eminent
Psychologist Dr. S.M. Mughni as head of the department. The Department
of Botany was established in 1963 and its founder head was Professor
Ali M. Eunus. During 1969-70 a department named Zoology is originated
from Botany department and in 1972 it started its academic activities
independently. The founder of this department was Professor Mustafizur
Rahman. The Department of Geology and Mining was established in
1976 separating from Department of Geography. Two teachers from
Geography department started the academic activities of Geology
and Mining and Dr. M. Rafiqul Islam acts as First Chairman in 1976.
It is mentionable
that the Department of Genetics and Breeding was established in
1996 under the Faculty of Life and Earth Science but this department
is included under the Faculty of Agriculture in the year of 2000.
The faculty
of Life and Earth Science contributes many important and significant
research attributes. Till to day more than 179 research students
have been awarded M. Phill and Ph. D degrees. More than 100 eminent
teachers of the faculty are very much devoted to the research studies
along with teaching.
