Faculty of Law is one of the celebrated faculties
accompanying the academic endeavor of the University of Rajshahi since
1953. As regard initiation, it is the
pioneer amongst the law faculties of the South Asia, undertook two years Law (pass course) program in 1954; Bachelor of Jurisprudence (B.Jur.) and Master of Jurisprudence (M.Jur.)
programs in the years 1970 and 1973 consecutively. B.Jur. and M.Jur. programs
were renamed as LLB (Honors) and LLM respectively in the years 1976 and
1981. Currently, the Faculty is providing different graduate and post graduate
degrees along with the research programs vide its only Department namely Law & Justice.
Among the academic degrees awarded by the faculty
of Law are four years LLB (Honors),
one year LLM, two years professional
Evening LLM and two years Master’s in Police Science. Faculty of
Law is making significant contribution in empirical legal study by awarding MPhil and PhD degrees to the successful fellows. It also hosts the research
projects funded by the University Grant Commission and University of Rajshahi
itself. Faculty of Law facilitates publication of two research journals namely,
Rajshahi University Law Review and Rajshahi University Law Journal. In
collaboration with different public and private universities and NGO’s the
faculty arranges seminar and training sessions on legal issues of public
importance to disseminate legal knowledge and to create legal awareness among
the law exponents.
With the spur of time the need for legal education
has been multiplied and to keep pace with the increasing demand
the faculty of Law has proposed its expansion by launching three other
departments namely, Business & Trade
Law; Personal Law & Society; and International & Comparative Law.
It is worth mentioning that Department of Business & Trade Law has received
authorization and is likely to be functioning so soon.
Faculty of Law of University of Rajshahi is well
acclaimed due to its pioneer role in disseminating legal education in
Bangladesh and alumni are making significant contribution in the Bar, Bench,
Teaching and law related activities. Faculty
of Law is committed to quality education and will continue its relentless
academic endeavor to make the law students change agents and social engineers
in governance and development of the country in the days to come.
