Introduction
The Department of Economics is one of the oldest departments of Rajshahi University which started its academic programme in 1954. By now, it has become a well-known institution of higher education and its former students have occupied important positions both at home and abroad.
As part of the evening Master’s programme initiated by the Rajshahi University, the Department of Economics is going to start a similar programme with effect from July 1, 2010. The courses will be given by highly experienced and qualified teachers. Since this is an evening programme, it will be particularly suitable for those who are in service as well as for those who would like to earn an additional degree to advance their career.
The cost of the programme has been kept to a minimum to make it affordable. The students will be admitted on merit and it is expected to be highly competitive.

Eligibility for Admission
A bachelor degree or its equivalent in any field including engineering, agriculture and medicine is the minimum educational requirement. The minimum qualifying points for being eligible to apply is 6 (six) with not more than one third division/class in any public examination. The point distribution is as follows:

Duration of the Programme
Normal duration of the Evening MSS programme shall be 2 (two) academic years from first admission into the programme. However, a student must complete the programme within a maximum of 5 (five) academic years including the year of first admission into the programme.
Curriculum
The programme consists of 20 (twenty) courses of which there shall be 8 (eight) core courses and 12 (twelve) minor courses. Each core and minor course shall be of 4 (four) and 3 (three) credits respectively.

Waiver
Students with a Master’s degree or 4 (four) year bachelor’s degree from any accredited university or institute may qualify for waiver of a maximum of 12 (twelve) credit hours and students with a degree from a 3 (three) year programme or any equivalent degree from any accredited university or institute may qualify for waiver of a maximum of 9 (nine) credit hours in similar courses offered in the programme, provided that all such students have obtained at least 2nd division/class or 45 (forty five) percent marks in traditional system or a CGPA of at least 3.0 in grading system.

Academic Year and Semester
There shall be two semesters in each academic year as follows:
Summer Semester: July to December
Winter Semester: January to June
In each semester, five courses shall be offered. A student must take at least two offered courses in a particular semester.
Degree Requirement
The Evening MSS programme shall be of 70 (seventy) credits of which 68 (sixty eight) are earmarked for courses and 2 (two) for viva-voce.
Award of Degrees
University of Rajshahi shall award the degree.
