About the Department
History
Livestock and poultry contribute significantly to the agro-based economy of Bangladesh.
Commercial enterprises aimed for dairy, poultry and meat production are taking the
strong roots and the demand for diversified veterinary services expanding with the
increased economic growth of the country. Keeping these views in consideration,
the department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science was established under
the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Rajshahi in 2004.
Objectives
The department was set up in order to produce qualified veterinarians having
integrated knowledge on veterinary medicine, animal production and health management,
to carryout diversified professional activities and to be the newest member of the
World Veterinary Community.
Programs
1. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine:
The department offers course-based semester system Docter of Veterinary Medicine
(DVM) program at undergraduate level that extends over a period of 10 semesters
(5 level/year) of which 9 semesters course work and 1 semester internship. The students
who obtain Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC)/equivalent from science group are
eligible for getting admission in DVM program. The department follows general principles
(minimum grade for admission, written test, marks distribution etc.) for admission
prescribed by the central admission committee of the university. But the department
has the sole authority to conduct and set criteria for written test. The admission
requirement and procedure usually varies year to year. The admission in the department
of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science comprises both written test (MCQ) on
physics, chemistry and biology based on higher secondary/equivalent syllabus and
score on academic achievement at HSC and SSC level.
2. Master of Science: The department offers Master of Science (MS) program
of three semesters (1½ years) extendable to five
semesters (2½ years) in special circumstances. The
program consists of course work and research work under designated research
supervisor/supervisors. The students having graduated from this
department/meeting the admission criteria from other universities can avail
themselves of the MS program. The semester starts either in January or in July
each year.
3. M Phil: To carry out
research work in a field of veterinary science in pursuit of an M Phil degree, a
research proposal along with recommendation from the supervisor has to submit for
the approval of the departmental Academic Committee. The researcher is supposed
to complete the work within two years under the supervision of the designated supervisor/supervisors.
The announcement inviting proposal for research work under this program is given
by the university authority each year usually in the beginning of every calendar
year. Not only the students of the department but also students from other universities
meeting the criteria can avail themselves of these program.
4. Ph D: The procedure
for a Ph D degree is the same as that for M Phil with the exception that the researcher
will be given a longer time, three years extendable in special circumstances up
to six years, to complete the program.
Departmental Services
The veterinary clinic (at Narikalbaria campus) of the department provides free
veterinary services for sick animals and birds in the surrounding areas of the university
campus. Artificial insemination (AI) centre gives services for improvement of the
breeds of cattle and goats in surrounding areas by insemination high quality semen
from improved breeds. In addition, the veterinarians give consultancy services to
farmers for rearing the livestock and poultry using modern scientific technologies.
Students' Association
The department organizes extra curricular programs on culture and sports through
the student association to develop leadership among the students.
Future Plan
It is expected that the department will be developed as a unique center for veterinary
education and research through animal health management, production and veterinary
extension program.
